Indicator

Access to supplementary health insurance

Definition

Proportion of the population with supplemental health insurance for selected coverage.

Measurement

This indicator is measured in the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS). For this indicator, persons with access to supplementary health insurance are those who have insurance, either through their own plan or through another provider, that covers all or some of the costs of their prescription medications or long-term care (including home care).

The proportion of people with supplementary health insurance is presented by type of insurance (prescription medication or long-term care), as well as by whether the insurance is obtained through a government-sponsored plan, an employer-sponsored plan, a plan sponsored through an association (e.g., union, trade association, or student organization), or from another source (e.g., private plan purchased from an insurance provider).
