Definition
Proportion of the population reporting having experienced barriers that limited access to different areas and activities in daily life in the past 12 months due to a long-term physical or mental health condition.
Measurement
This indicator is measured in the Canadian Survey on Disability (CSD). Survey respondents are asked:
In the past 12 months, have you experienced barriers with any of the following features inside or outside public spaces because of your condition(s)?
- Entrances of exits to buildings
- Floorplans inside buildings
- Lighting or sound levels inside buildings
- Public washrooms
- Wait lines
- Self-serve technology
- Announcements or alarms
- Signs or directions
- Pedestrian signals at intersections or crosswalks
- Sidewalks when covered in ice or snow
- Sidewalks in general
